Installing Windows 8.1 on a Mac Using Bootcamp: A Step-by-Step Guide
Note: These models no longer support Boot Camp: MacBook Air M1, 2020; MacBook Pro 13', M1, 2020; Mac mini M1, 2020; iMac 24-inch, M1, 2021, and all devices with an M1 chip.
To verify if Windows 8.1 can be installed on your device, please follow these instructions:
- Select the Apple logo at the top of your screen.
- Choose About this Mac to see your system’s specifications.
Note: On Intel-based PCs, you’ll see 'Processor', while on Apple devices, you’ll see 'Chip'.
Execute the following steps:
Check for Required Software Updates
Important: Update your macOS before installing Windows.
- Navigate to the Apple menu at the top-left corner and select System Preferences.
- Tap Software Update.
- If your system is up-to-date, a notification will confirm no updates are needed.
The system automatically searches for updates. Please wait momentarily for the process to complete. If updates are found, click Update Now and follow the prompts to download and install them.
Note: If your Mac reboots post-update, access Software Update again to ensure all updates are installed.
Prepare Your Mac for Windows Installation
The Boot Camp Assistant tool readies your device by creating a new partition for Windows named BOOTCAMP and downloads necessary Boot Camp support software.
Note: If using a portable Mac, ensure it is connected to power before proceeding.
- Insert a USB drive into your Mac and open Boot Camp Assistant found under Applications > Utilities.
- At the introduction screen, select Continue.
- Choose all the required options and click Continue.
- Pick the downloaded Windows 8.1 .iso file and the USB drive for the installation media.
- Adjust the desired space allocation for Windows by sliding the partition bar, then select Install.
- Your Mac will reboot to initiate the Windows 8.1 installation.
Note: You cannot modify the partition size after installation.

Install Boot Camp Drivers on Windows
Upon Windows installation, the Boot Camp drivers tailored for your Mac will start to install.
- Adhere to the Boot Camp installer’s on-screen instructions.
- Click Finish once installation completes.
- Restart your device and follow prompts for any subsequent installation programs.
Important: Do not press the Cancel button during the installation process.
If notified that the software hasn't passed the Windows logo test, select Continue.
Unresponsive installer dialogues may be due to hidden windows. Check behind any open windows.
